UX/UI Designer – Freelance

NYC or Remote

Velocity, a division of Small Planet, is looking for an experienced UX/UI designer who can ramp up quickly on a fast-paced, client product team that is creating experiences used by millions. Our client is a leader in its category and poised for rapid growth.

About the Role

The UX/UI designer works closely with cross-functional teams to strategize, design, and develop products across platforms (iOS, Android, and web).

You‘ll present work and defend design decisions based on UX best practices and standards, such as Material Design and Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines. You’ll also create production assets and documentation for developer handoff.

Responsibilities:
  • Work collaboratively in a team setting
  • Create UX documentation (flows, wireframes, prototypes, etc.)
  • Execute high-fidelity screen designs for mobile and desktop, maintaining consistency with existing design systems
  • Present and defend work to teams and stakeholders
  • Engage with developers for proper handoff
  • Conduct styling and design QA
  • Assist with UX research, as necessary

Requirements

  • BFA or equivalent in Graphic Design, Digital Design, or a related field
  • 3+ years of design experience working on cross-functional teams in tech-focused industries and shipping products
  • Familiarity with common design and prototyping tools such as Sketch and Figma
  • Familiarity with design best practices and documented standards such as Material Design and the Apple Human Interface Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of user research methodology (quantitative and qualitative)
  • Experience working in an Agile software environment or on Scrum teams
  • Excellent organizational skills when defining, delivering, and documenting project elements
  • Ability to collaborate with others and guide group conversations towards user centered design thinking
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks in a high-velocity setting

Pluses

  • Ability to code in HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Direct experience designing for natively coded mobile applications
  • Experience leading ideation workshops/sessions (brainstorming, mapping, prioritizing)
  • Experience with Zeplin and/or Axure RP
  • Familiarity with Design Sprints, Lean UX, and Design Thinking
  • Experience building design systems for digital products
